Building Flaxmere for the future

Partnering with Pāharakeke Trades United

We’re working with Pāharakeke Trades United to explore the possibility of a much-anticipated trades academy for the Flaxmere community. Pāharakeke Trades United, conceived in April 2022, is the brainchild of local contractors who have actively united to contribute to the local construction sector.

Pāharakeke Trades United recently scored a significant victory by securing a contract from Kāinga Ora to construct 60 homes. This contract holds immense promise for both the local community and the trades cohort concept. To meet the demand for skills and labour required for this development, we are lending support in the form of training guidance, forging connections with government departments, and exploring the creation of a direct skills pipeline from Flaxmere College to the construction site.

We have initiated discussions with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) to explore the possibility of establishing a trades academy at Flaxmere College, leveraging our BCATS programmes and micro-credentials. These specialised training programmes will be tailored to cater to the specific needs of the Pāharakeke development, with broader benefits extending to the entire community, enhancing the local workforce.

Described by its founders as a “legacy” project, Pāharakeke Trades United aspires to be a shining example of what can be accomplished by working together with the community for the community. We are immensely proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative, which promises to be a game-changer for Flaxmere and its future.
