Application to develop a qualification in Transmission Maintenance Switching

Industry requested a qualification in Transmission Maintenance Switching.  There is a need for a new qualification in transmission maintenance switching because the electricity supply industry is growing. Expected trainee numbers will be small but steady, and there is no current formal qualification.

Waihanga Ara Rau created a qualification draft and submitted an application for approval to develop to NZQA in June 2022.

 

Proposed title

New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Transmission Maintenance Switching) (Level 4) (80 credits)

Proposed Strategic Purpose Statement

This qualification is designed to provide the electricity supply industry with graduates who have sufficient technical and theoretical knowledge, practical skills and experience to plan, compile, check, control and/or action switching of the National Grid High Voltage Transmission network and the control of permits & assurances required for planned and unplanned work.

This qualification is suitable for people who are employed in the transmission sector of the electricity supply industry and may be changing their career path from elsewhere in the industry.

Graduates will be able to work in complex switching operations with limited supervision on transmission networks in the electricity supply industry.

 Proposed Graduate Profile Outcomes

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Interpret and apply knowledge of electrical codes of practice, electricity supply industry standards, and health and safety requirements when carrying out switching operations on transmission networks and controlling permitting/assurance issue and cancellation.
  • Apply knowledge of maintenance switching to work on transmission networks in accordance with both asset owner standards and electricity supply industry standards.
