He maurea kai whiria!

Philip AldridgeIt seems fitting that 2023 is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, as we’ll be moving quickly to achieve results for you. And as the title He maurea kai whiria suggests, this year is about tackling the issues that matter the most to you.

We’re not, however, starting from scratch. We’re building on what we’ve already achieved. Our people, plans, and processes are in place. We’ve completed projects reviewing, developing and maintaining 25 qualifications and 1,005 unit standards, completed over 900 pre-assessment and post-assessment moderation and consent to assess applications, and have produced a range of data, insights and recommendations. The team and I are proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but we know more needs to be done.

As part of our role, we’ve spoken to you and heard about the issues you’re facing. Your feedback will be factored into our five-year strategy and operational plan, both of which will be published this year. You’ve told us that attracting and retaining people across construction and infrastructure is a challenge, as is equity, diversity and inclusion. Relevant skills and training, funding and being clear on what our role is and what we can do are also important to you.

This year we’ll produce several workforce development plans for different sectors across construction and infrastructure that outline opportunities and challenges. We will work with each industry sector on key activities. A new approach that aims to improve the consistency of training delivery around the country is in the works, and a Te Tiriti framework is coming soon, so strap yourself in for an exciting year.

You can keep updated on what we’re doing through our e-news Pitopito Kōrero, this website and our LinkedIn page. We will work together with you to ensure you have a strong voice across the vocational education and training system.

I look forward to seeing and connecting with more of you throughout the year.

Ngā mihi nui, Philip Aldridge, Chief Executive.
