We are pleased to welcome Sadhna Chandra to Waihanga Ara Rau, as well as back to the construction and infrastructure education sector. She brings a wealth of experience, working for NZQA for 14 years, setting up the National Qualifications Framework together with so many other New Zealanders at the time. Over the last 15 years she has continued her relationship with the industry, working with Connexis and the Skills Organisation.

Sadhna feels Waihanga Ara Rau is the right place for her now, where she can meaningfully put into action her passion and years of experience. She feels that "The partnership, participation and protection of Māori and Pacific peoples' interests in vocational education must be served from the heart." Ka rawe!

As the Qualification System Lead, Sadhna says her team are confident and energised for the new products they are going to develop. Sadhna is responsible for the product development for the following sectors with Waihanga Ara Rau:

  • Construction and Infrastructure Services
  • Access trades
  • Energy and Telecommunications (including Gas)
  • Plumbing Drainlaying Gasfitting
  • Three Waters

Meeting industry needs and requirements for qualifications and skill standards, Sadhna and her wider team work with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure qualifications are current and relevant. Sadhna also leads, facilitates and trains her team for continuous improvement and innovation.

Born in Labasa, Fiji, to third generation Fiji Indians, she spent 33 years studying, living and working in Wellington, where she first set down her New Zealand roots. There she raised two sons, who kept her busy (or did she keep them busy?) with family outings, social occasions, picnics, and of course lots of sports. They enjoyed shopping together and Sadhna says it wasn't uncommon to find their family of four spending lots of time at Rebel Sports in the North City Shopping Centre.

While working full-time and raising her family, she also trained in karate, planted a garden, jazzercised, hit the gym, and spent nights dreaming of and eventually managing extensive home renovation projects. Sadhna aspires for excellence in all that she does, at home and at work. She has pride and admiration for the industries she has worked with, who work hard to make training available. She admires the Specialist Trades, such as scaffolding, rigging, rope access and crane, who perform strong and multi-directional work, while managing high risks with regards to health and safety.

She has now rehomed her goldfish and her Labrador Retriever, Bailey Chandra, to a lovely Wellington home, and made the move to Auckland. She has given up running and red wine, but walks and enjoys the occasional cocktail, as well as travelling and reading.

It’s great to have Sadhna as part of our team.
