What’s on the assurance horizon

Our Assurance team update on all things happening with Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (BCATS) unit standards in schools.

The assurance team at Waihanga Ara Rau are moving moderation beyond the traditional compliance-centric process that it has been – and you’re right at the centre. We’re taking a higher-level approach. With this in mind, we have been looking critically at the focus and outcomes of the moderation cluster workshops. The aim is to make them even more effective and valuable than they already are.

To do this, we’ve developed a new style of workshop. We’ll still spend time networking, sharing stories, and peer-moderating, but we’ll also look closely at internal moderation. On top of that, you’ll get some intel about Workforce Development Plans, specifically:

  • what Workforce Development Plans are,
  • where schools fit,
  • how schools contribute, and why schools’ contributions are so important.

We look forward to these new workshops and working together to elevate assurance.

A series of trial workshops will kick off in Term 2. These are intended to test, get feedback, and refine our thinking before rolling out the new workshops nationally in Term 4. We know Term 3 is extra busy, so no workshops will take place then.

This means that some cluster groups’ workshops won’t occur until next year. If so, we’ll run our virtual ‘Drop-In’ sessions for you. Unless you’re participating in the trial workshops, you’ll be notified in Term 2 whether you’ll be ‘dropping in’ or ‘workshopping’.

We’ll keep you in the loop in subsequent issues of our e-newsletter Te Pae Tawhiti. Keep an eye out!
