Waihanga Ara Rau, with the support from Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) and industry representatives, have developed a NEW qualification in swimming pool building. This is in response to industry needs and we would like to thank everyone who has helped shape this qualification so far. The new qualification was approved for listing on the NZQA framework in September 2025.
An NZ qualification for swimming pool building will enhance industry reputation, and support employee retention by providing clear career pathways. This formal qualification will ensure a consistent level of expertise, improve service quality, and create a more attractive and sustainable industry for current and future employees. This will lead to end users gaining more trust and respect in the quality of delivery from swimming pool builders.
This qualification is intended for people working in or new to the swimming pool building industry.
It recognises the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare, and carry out swimming pool building that are fit-for-purpose, durable, and aligned with environmental and legislative requirements.
The optional strands recognise specialised skills required for:
Graduates will be able to work unsupervised to the required technical, safety, quality, and productivity standards expected of a competent swimming pool builder.
