Review of Level 3 Construction Trade micro-credentials

As part of our broader carpentry review and the Building Pathways project, Waihanga Ara Rau is reviewing a suite of Level 3 Construction Trade micro-credentials designed to support targeted learning and recognition of skills in specific areas of the construction industry.

These credentials offer flexible pathways into the industry and provide additional skills for learners already in training. As part of this qualification review, we are introducing recently developed core construction and carpentry skill standards as mandatory “building blocks” used by all providers.

Why are these micro-credentials being reviewed?

The review ensures these shorter credentials:

  • Continue to reflect real-world tasks and industry expectations
  • Provide relevant, valuable learning options for learners and employers
  • Address skill gaps and labour needs in focused areas
  • Evolve with changes in building practices, tools, and materials
  • Include skill standards that will support learner progression through the building qualification pathway.

Stakeholder engagement

  • Providers offering micro-credentials

  • Employers using these programmes or similar to onboard or upskill workers

  • Community organisations, including iwi training initiatives

  • Learners who’ve completed or are considering micro-credential study.
