Creating avenues for aspiring teachers

Marcus Ahsin's journey from student to teacher

As an avid learner, Marcus Ahsin‘s journey from student to teacher began and continues today at Tokoroa High School, thanks to his teacher, Mr Erick Hamman.

“In 2016, I began my academic journey as a student at Tokoroa High School. It was during this time that Mr Hamman awakened my interest in technology and construction, which soon ignited my passion for building construction. I completed my year 13 studies with both technology and building construction pathways.

“As an avid learner myself, I found immense joy in helping others and soon discovered that imparting knowledge to fellow students came naturally to me. Teaching became another passion of mine!

“Following graduation from high school, the principal, Mr Wille Ford, offered me a job opportunity as his technology teacher assistant, something I took great pride in accepting! I was able to acquire a LAT for teaching in 2022. I currently collaborate with my teacher and friend, Mr Hamman, who is retiring this year, to enable me to complete my studies to become a fully qualified technology teacher.

“My future plans are to continue teaching the BCATS course at school because we have had great success in placing students into employment and apprenticeships. One of our first BCATS students started his own construction company this year.

“In Tokoroa High School, avenues are created for aspiring teachers in the field of technology.”
